Transgender Day of Remembrance

Date:
Thursday, November 20, 2008 - 6:30pm
Location:
Portland State University Park Blocks (SW Park & Montgomery)

Please join the Human Rights Campaign in conjunction with Portland State University to commemorate the Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR), which was first observed on November 28, 1999 in San Francisco in honor of Rita Hester, a transgender woman whose 1998 murder is still unsolved. Since then, TDOR observances have been held in dozens of cities all over the world. TDOR's goals are:

  • To raise public awareness of hate crimes against transgender people,
  • To mourn for and honor the lives of those who have been lost to anti-transgender violence,
  • To express respect and love for the transgender community in the face of indifference and hatred,
  • To give allies the opportunity to stand in solidarity with the transgender comunity.

The candlelight vigil will be held in the PSU Park Blocks from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., and will feature speeches by transgender therapist and author Reid Vanderburgh, "Spirit of Price" award winner Laura Calvo, and Jean Burleton, Exectuive Director at TransActive. Following the vigil from 8:00 - 9:00 p.m. in the Portland State University Smith Center Ballroom (Smith Room 355), Scott Turner Schofield, a transgender man, will present a performance about gender and sexuality in the Deep South, his work centering on the contradictions and comedy.
